A long journey is over. The original FJ Cruiser has been discontinued last January and the whole car world is eagerly waiting to see what’s next from the Japanese manufacturer. We can definitely say that the original model was successful. It may not manage to make some spectacular sales numbers, but instant recognition and hardcore fanbase gave cult status to it. It looks like Toyota is preparing something new, although it may not come with the same name. For now, we will call it the 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser, because we are sure it will definitely be a spiritual successor of this capable SUV.
- Attractive styling
- Decent off-road capabilities
- Should be practical too
- Won’t be a genuine SUV anymore
- Still waits for serial production
We have no doubt that the new 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser will be heavily based on the last-year concept called FT-4X. This concept was presented last year at the New York Auto Show and it has brought some pretty interesting design solutions. It definitely continues FJ’s tradition of making thing little bit more interesting compared to the rest of the company’s lineup. There is an attractive, SUVish shape which utilizes a lot of sharps angles. The overall look is pretty futuristic, which clearly indicates that younger generations are Toyota’s primary objective with this model. Interestingly, the new model will definitely be a crossover, which won’t affect very good on off-road capabilities, but should provide much better driving dynamics and a higher level of comfort.
The recent concept has brought a lot of interesting touches on the inside as well. We hope that the new FJ Cruiser will keep some of these design solutions. The dashboard is completely out of a matrix. It comes with a more rugged approach and relies on minimalism. Once again, physical controls are oversized, while digital features are minimal. Such a design approach clearly separates this crossover from the crowd and that should be highly beneficial for such a competitive segment. Don’t forget that this segment includes models like Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Toyota C-HR, and other quality, but more conventional crossovers.
We are pretty sure that Toyota won’t risk with the engine in this case. Most likely, base models will feature the company’s new 2.0-liter unit with 169 horsepower. Of course, we count on a more powerful option as well. We are pretty sure it will be a familiar turbo inline-four, which delivers around 235 horsepower. Hybrid version seems likely too.
2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser Release Date and Price
Many reports suggest the new 2020 Toyota FJ Cruiser will enter serial production in the next year. Also, there is a big chance to see a different name as well. Details about the price should be known soon.
