One of the longest-living models in automotive history is about to get another, eleventh overhaul this year. The 12th generation is about to come as the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban and we count on plenty of novelties.
This redesign will bring some completely new features, such as smaller-displacement engines, as well as a completely new design, characterized by a lighter body and more advanced technologies. Of course, the interior will come new as well. The new model is in the final stage of development and should hit the market sometime in the second half of the year.
- Wide engine offer.
- Spacious and comfortable cabin.
- Plenty of cargo space.
- Too large for an urban ride.
Just like the new Tahoe, as well as already introduced Silverado pickup truck, the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban will also switch to a new T1 architecture. This platform brings numerous improvements and one of the first that come to mind is weight reduction, as the new model is expected to be at least 300 pounds lighter. Such savings guarantee better efficiency and driving dynamics.
But the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban will also be more comfortable, thanks to an independent rear suspension, which probably won’t be standard, but rather offered as an option. Also, we count on new styling. Of course, the new model will continue with a typical SUV layout, while the front end is expected to be borrowed from the recently-introduced Silverado. Expect to see those interesting air curtains at the front bumpers, as well as many other nice details.
The outgoing model already features a spacious and comfortable cabin, but the competition is getting tougher and tougher. For example, the recently-redesigned Ford Expedition XL now come with more opulent cabin than before. So, we could expect the same from the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban. Therefore, count on a new dashboard design, which won’t just feature more attractive lines. The materials quality will be at a higher level, while the list of latest tech features should be longer as well.
We expect that the 2020 Chevrolet Suburban will mimic the new Silverado in terms of engines. Therefore, base models should feature the company’s new 2.7-liter turbo inline-four, which is good for about 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. Two familiar V8 units will continue in the same way, probably with minor modifications only.
Those are two well-known engines, with displacements of 5.3 and 6.2 liters. Finally, many reports also suggest a diesel version of the new-generation Suburban. That should be a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel, probably tuned to around 280 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque.
2020 Chevrolet Suburban Release Date and Price
We expect to see 2020 Chevrolet Suburban sometime in the second half of the year, probably in the third quarter. The current model features a starting price of around $51,000. On the other side, the new one could be slightly cheaper, due to a new four-cylinder engine.
