Ram currently makes the only diesel powered full size truck on the US market, the 2019 Ram 1500 Diesel. While this may seem like a surprise for many people, it allowed Ram to get a good share of the market for themselves thanks to their fuel efficient oil burner which is a lot more fun to drive than many other petrol powered trucks on the market. The 2019 RAM 1500 Diesel model is the last one to hit the market and despite the fact it does not come with a fancy aluminum body or with a lot of electronic features, the engine and the chassis do make a really nice work together.

Performance and MPG

While Ford advertizes their truck to get well over 24 MPG on the highway, that truck will barely average 18 MPG due to the turbocharged V6. The 2019 Ram 1500 Diesel on the other hand prove to average nearly 22 MPG in a real World test and it was more than capable at getting over 26 MPG on the highway. The 3 liter twin-turbo diesel V6 in it is made by VM Motori and even though it only puts out around 240 horsepower, the engine provides 420 lb-ft of torque from as low as 2000 rpm which is more even than the most powerful V8.

The only transmission of choice is an 8 speed automatic which is coupled to a 3.55:1 rear axle. Unfortunately this is the only axle option which should be enough for most but it will certainly not please everyone. Rear wheel drive is standard while all wheel drive is available as an option and no matter the trim level, features such as a 230 amps alternator and a heavy-duty engine cooling system are standard features.

The exterior of the newest Ram is understated and we like that about it because it allows its driver to pass incognito in traffic. There are optional packages which add chrome inserts and chrome wheels but even with these, the truck simply looks good. The diesel is no different than the V8 which is fine for us but we would’ve liked a more unique design to it. The good part is that it is available with all the usual packages of the V8 so the buyer will get the chance of getting a modular bed, all the cabin sizes and even quite a few wheel designs. The drawback is that there is only a single bed length available which is a bit disappointing.

Inside the cabin, the base model of the 2019 Ram 1500 Diesel comes with a few more features than its V6 and V8 petrol powered counterparts which is to be expected considering the considerably higher price-tag. It has the optional knob for changing gears on the 8 speed automatic, a standard infotainment system with better than average speakers and even RDS radio as well as a leather wrapped steering wheel and height adjustable driver and passenger’s front seats.

2019 RAM 1500 Diesel Price and Release Date

Even the base model of the diesel powered Ram is capable to tow with ease up to 8,560 pounds which is a nice 15% increase over the petrol powered V6 but it is nearly 1,500 pounds down on the V8. However, more than 8,500 pounds it more than enough for a half a ton truck and it will certainly be capable of towing even more than that if needed. The only real drawback we see with the 1500 diesel is that it starts at nearly $36,000 which is nearly $3,000 more than the truck equipped with the V8 Hemi and with the 8 speed automatic. However, it is inline with the F-150 EcoBoost truck and it does have a strong point over it, its fuel consumption. You can expect it in the end of 2018.
