The Cayenne is currently the best selling car Porsche makes and it also happens to be the car which managed to get Porsche out of a really tough situation. It sold so good that it allowed them to further develop their sport models which is great not only for the consumers but also for the car industry because Porsche managed to get a lot of innovations on the market. The current model, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne, has been launched last year and it is expected to be the last model of this generation. This is because Porsche is slowly moving to a VW’s new modular platform which now underpins the latest generation of the Q7 as well as the upcoming Touareg, Bentayga and even the Lamborghini SUV.

Until then though, this is the latest and most advanced version of the old Touareg platform. The newest Cayenne is currently available in most parts of the World and it starts at roughly the equivalent of $60,000 which is a small price to pay for such a well engineered car. All wheel drive is standard on all models and some even come with unique torque-vectoring setups that allow it to drive better than most regular sports cars on the market. The drawback of the current Cayenne is that it is not as fuel efficient as we would like and the old platform is starting to show its age.


Under the hood of the 2018 Porsche Cayenne there are quite a few engines. In the US the car comes with three different petrol engines, a 300 horsepower 3.6 liter naturally aspirated VR6 which has been around since it was launched, a twin-turbocharged V6 which replaced the old V8 on the S model. This provides a hefty 420 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque, all while using just as much fuel as the base model of the car. The top of the range Turbo S model on the other hand sticks with the old 4.8 liter twin-turbo V8 which can provide 550 or 570 horsepower and up to 590 lb-ft of torque, depending on the tune required by the buyer.


In Europe on the other hand, the Cayenne comes with the three petrol engines as well as with two diesel versions. The base diesel is a 3 liter twin-turbo V6 with 262 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque while the range topping S model comes with a Porsche-developed 4.1 liter twin-turbo V8 with 385 horsepower, 630 lb-ft of torque and a 40% better fuel consumption than the Turbo S petrol engined car.

A hybrid is also available in the US which has a 3 liter V6 coupled with a pair of electric motors. This particular model can run in an electric mode only and it has been rated at well over 50 MPG on average if driven carefully.

Exterior and Interior

The exterior of the newest Cayenne has not been changed all that much since it was originally released back in 2010. It has a slightly different front end with new air intakes in the front bumper, a new set of fully LED headlights which were not available when it was launched as well as new wheels on certain models. The sportier S and Turbo S models come with a more aggressive body kit as well as a quad-exhaust system. Inside the cabin, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne is very impressive because it manages to offer a very comfortable and good looking interior without making any sacrifices. However, despite the very nice materials and the good equipment level, an Audi Q7 is not only roomier inside but it also comes with a lot more gear at the same price point which may prove to be a problem for Porsche until their newest Cayenne will launch some time in the near future.
