The Frontier has been first introduced on the US market back in 2004 meaning it has been sold for nearly 11 years and Nissan still plans to sell it for at least one more. However, they finally decided that this might be the right time to replace the car with the 2017 Nissan Frontier. This truck is going to be first released at the end of 2015 and it will not go on sale until the mid of 2017. Just like before, it will actually be based on the International Navara rather than being an all new truck which is fine for us because the Navara always proved to be a great truck.

2017 Nissan Frontier Release Date and Price

The 2017 model will also make use of a new chassis which is made out of high strength steel and even some aluminum and composites in key areas in order to give it as much strength as possible. The body will still be made of steel but the entire package should weigh at least a couple of pounds less than before. On top of that, the design on the exterior as well as on the interior will change slightly for the US version of the truck in order to better fit Nissan’s roster of cars. The release price is likely going to be around $20,000 and it should become on of the cheaper trucks in its class.

Engine wise, the new 2017 Nissan Frontier is going to make use of all new engines which are great news for everyone expecting to buy a compact pick-up truck. The base model will stick with a 2.5 liter inline 4 but this time the engine will feature direct injection in order to provide around 190 horsepower and more than 180 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range, this may be the first Frontier to get a diesel engine. A 2.3 liter diesel with around 160 horsepower and more than 270 lb-ft of torque. Both of these will be available with rear or all wheel drive and both of them will come as standard with a 6 speed manual gearbox.

The top of the range models on the other hand will make use of a couple of new engines. The current 4 liter V6 is expected to be replaced with a 3.7 liter V6 with 320 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque which should be enough to make it the most powerful compact truck in its class. On top of that Nissan might also release a 2.3 liter twin-turbo diesel inline 4 with up to 200 horsepower and more than 400 lb-ft of torque. Both of these could be mated to a 7 speed automatic and both of them would come with all wheel drive as standard.

2017 Frontier Design

Just as we mentioned before, the design of the US model of the 2017 Nissan Frontier will change slightly over that of the International model of the Navara. The front end is expected to borrow some design cues from the Titan with new headlights and a new grille but with a similar bumper to the Navara while in the back it should receive an all new tailgate as well as new wheel designs for the entire range.

The cabin of the truck will grow a lot from the previous model both in size and in quality. All the materials are going to be better even on the base model which will receive softer and nicer to the touch plastics and even aluminum inserts on some high end models. The seats will be cloth on the base model or vinyl in order to allow the interior to be cleaner with ease while more luxurious models will make use of leather on the seats and the upholstery.
