The Amarok has first been released back in 2009 and since then it did not change all that much. It still is the same mid-size truck built by VW in Argentina or Germany and it still offers the amount of comfort you would expect from a VW. However, all of these come with a price.

The 2018 model does not bring too many novelties on the table so it still is the same body-on-frame rugged construction which has the interior of a Golf. Some new features include things such as new headlights as well as a slightly different grille and new wheel designs. Besides these, the interior received a small update with better materials and a few new equipment choices which are going to impress quite a few people. The major drawback of the Amarok though is going to remain its price which is around 20% higher than that of its competitors for the base model while the range topping version is nearly 60% more than its nearest competitor.

Engine

Engine wise, the 2018 Volkswagen Amarok is available with two engine options, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engine and a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI is standard one and the V-6 TDI makes 161 horsepower, comes mated to a manual transmission. This “standard” 2l engine is most considered woefully underpowered.
The stronger new 3.0 l, has 220 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission . When it comes to his performance Volkswagen says the Amarok can reach a top speed of 120 mph and will hit 62 mph in 7.9 seconds. The new 2018 Amarok comes standard in RWD form, but VW’s 4Motion AWD system is optional.

Exterior

Just as we previously mentioned, the exterior of the Amarok remained pretty much unchanged and just like before, the truck is available in three different trim levels with a few unique trim levels in select markets. The base version comes with black bumpers and mirrors, steel wheels and a bare bed and it is intended for people looking for a cheap work truck. The “Trendline” as well as the “Highline” both come with alloy wheels, color coded bumpers and a linen bed. However, the higher up models also adds HID headlights, LED tail lights and even mud-guards and a chromed rear bumper.

Interior

The cabin of the 2018 Volkswagen Amarok can be accurately described as a comfortable space to drive in. The materials used here are far above the average of its class with a soft materials on the dashboard and door covers and a really nice steering wheel covered in leather on the two higher end models. The infotainment system is only an audio player for the base version but the other two come with touch-screens and an Android based system which is far better than what the previous versions of the truck used to have. The leather upholstery is available only on the premium versions and only as an option while the air conditioning system comes as standard on all models, a great feature for a truck.

2018 Volkswagen Amarok Release Date and Price

The Volkswagen Amarok starts at just over the equivalent of $28,850 in Germany €25,720 (acording to Top Speed) and it can go up to as far as $60,000 which is an insane amount of money, especially since it is a pickup truck and not a luxury SUV.
