The 2018 Nissan Leaf is a small family car that runs solely on electricity meaning it is one of the few true green cars currently on the market. It has been first released back in 2010 with a range of 73 miles, which was quite dependent on the climate the car was operated in. However, it received upgraded batteries which were quite a bit more consistent and they were able to provide around 107 miles of range with ease. Despite that though, the Leaf has not been as successful as the Tesla Model S or even the hybrid Volt mostly because the range was quite small and it did not offer a true fast charging system.

2018 Nissan Leaf Release Date and Price

In order to solve these problems the Japanese manufacturer is going to release the 2018 Nissan Leaf quite soon. This is not going to be an all new car like early reports suggested but rather an upgrade of the current vehicle. It will include a few new technologies, a similar design and most importantly, a new powertrain. These should make it a best seller and it should give Nissan a needed boost in the electric car market. While the release date has not been announced just yet, it seems that it may come at the end of August or early September at an under $30,000 price which is slightly less than before. This will drop even further with the help of the government grants.

Engine

Under the hood of the 2018 Nissan Leaf there is going to be an all new powertrain which is going to include a new engine, gearbox and even a new set of batteries. These are meant to provide a longer range and a more relaxed driving style. On top of that, Nissan is also going to add a more efficient air conditioning system and a lot of new energy saving technologies.

The engine is likely going to be a more compact and efficient 107 horsepower unit which will still provide around 187 lb-ft of torque. It will be mated to a single speed constant ratio gearbox that will be lighter and it will get most of its power from a 30 kWh battery, which will fit the same spot as the previous 24 kWh unit. This is because the new battery is more compact and denser, so it should also be just as heavy as before. These changes alone are going to boost its range to nearly 107 miles, which is very good for such a cheap car but not nearly as good as its competitors, the Volt and the Model 3.

Unfortunately, the exterior design of the new Leaf will remain pretty much unchanged which is not that great, especially since it has been criticized to look too futuristic for its time. However, it will receive a new set of wheels that will reduce its drag coefficient even more and on top of that, it should get more efficient front and rear lights. The car will still feature four doors and that happy design but this time a fast charging port might be installed under the front flap.

Inside the cabin things are going to be a bit more impressive because the 2018 Nissan Leaf should get a new design as well as a slightly different dashboard. The steering wheel is also going to be replaced with a better looking unit while the central mounted LCD screen should now use a new OLED technology which would reduce the power usage by quite a bit margin over the previous LCD panel. On top of that, the car should also get a new, more efficient, electric steering rack as well as a new air conditioning system.
