We are not surprised by the fact that GM is getting ready to overhaul the Malibu because the current version of the model has been on the market for three years now. If they want to win the competition such as Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, the Malibu has to be more powerful than ever. The vehicle was shown at the New York Auto Show when the company presented a revamped version of the vehicle boasting new styling which replaces the slab-sided look of the current model. The company claims that their new 2018 Chevrolet Malibu will be anything but ordinary because of its expressive styling and great engineering.
When the company announced that we can expect to be blown away styling-wise, we thought they were kidding but we now see that it was anything but a joke. The vehicle will hit the market sleeker, more elegant and sportier than the vehicle it replaces. It will be based on the Epsilon 2 architecture, which represents a revised version of the Epsilon 1. Because of the new architecture, handling of the vehicle will be enhanced, and thanks to the new wheelbase which has also grown in size, the quality of ride will be improved. The new model will be 2.3 inches longer than the outgoing vehicle. Even though it has grown in size, the vehicle has lost up to 300 pounds and therefore customers will be offered improved fuel economy and livelier handling. The vehicle has newly designed headlights, taillights, and the front apron. The front fascia of the car is decorated with a new split front grille. The rear end of the car has new, slimmer taillights.
The previous model of Chevy Malibu offered comfortable ride and well-appointed cabin but rear passengers didn’t really enjoy ample of legroom. The company finally decided to change that in the new 2018 Chevrolet Malibu. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, they added 1.3 inches of additional legroom for rear seats. The cabin is filled with excellent technological features that can be easily used. The center stack arrives with less buttons and knobs and a great number of commands is easily accessible on the 7-inch touchscreen that arrives as standard even on lower trim levels.
As for the engine, there will be several options. The first one is a turbocharged, 1.5-liter, four-cylinder good for 160 hp and 184 pound feet of torque. The four-cylinder now replaces the current 2.5 liter engine that produced around 197 hp and 191 pound feet of torque. The new engine will have lower output, but it will be more fuel efficient. Fuel efficiency of the new one is rated at 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. There will also be a hybrid variant that arrives as a combo of a pair of improved electric motors, a 1.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline powerplant. The system makes 182 hp with fuel economy estimated at 47 mpg combined.
