The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan also happens to be the last model of this generation which is going to be replaced by the start of 2016 with a new model which should offer a three seating option. This will no longer be built in Germany like the current model but VW is rather going to build it in Mexico in order to reduce costs as much as possible. Until then though, this generation is the most refined one yet and it still is one of the most refined compact crossovers on the US market and one of the better ones in Europe.

Just like before, the car can be had for around $25,000 for a base model in the US while in the rest of the World it will start at the equivalent of $32,000 or more. This is because the European version is slightly better equipped and it comes with more engine options which add up to the total cost of the car. The 2017 Tiguan is already available for sale and it will go in this form for another year.

Exterior and Interior

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan preview

The exterior of the car did not change all that much since it was originally released back in 2007. VW worked on the front end of the car so it has a new grille and a new set of headlights but these do not change the general look. Instead, the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is now available with a new R-Line trim level on the US market which adds an all new body kit with color coded bumpers, mirrors and all new wheels as well as a new exhaust system. The car looks cleaner than ever and it even has an all new set of LED headlights and fog-lamps which really do complete its looks. The only real problem with it is that it still is one of the lowest cars in its class so it will not go off-road. Instead, the on-road capabilities are better than most others so the Tiguan will surely impress some people.Inside the cabin it is just as refined as before and before everything else, the Tiguan remains a Volkswagen. The materials are certainly better than the average of its class but the amount of space available for the five passengers is quite small. On top of that it comes with a dated infotainment system which will not be replaced until the new model arrives which is a bit of a shame.

2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Engine

Under the hood of the new 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan there is a single engine choice for the US market, a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which has been around ever since the car has been first released on the market back in 2007. The engine is refined but it does not feel as refined as the EcoBoost Ford or even the Fiat 1.4 liter turbocharged engine. The good part is that it can provide 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque and it is mated to a standard 6 speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox which sends all of its power to an all wheel drive system. The gearbox is smooth and fast and the paddles on the steering wheel provide a really nice response. Europe also gets a smaller 1.4 liter turbocharged inline 4 with 122 or 150 horsepower and up to 180 lb-ft of torque and there is also a 2 liter diesel available. This comes with 110, 140 or 170 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque which is quite impressive, especially since all three of them are capable of getting over 40 MPG on average. These come with a slightly different 6 speed automatic or with a 6 speed manual which is the preferred choice in Europe.
